Management Training is a  Waste of Time and Money!  Stop it  Immediately!

Yes, that's right.  Most management training is completely useless. It wastes your time and money.  But, there is a much better way to do it than the failures of the past.

No matter how many leadership skills your team masters, there is always room for improvement.  Management training shouldn’t be sought as a fast fix, it should be a continuous effort….one that is a top priority for any effective team.

When I speak of management training I’m not referring to a day-long workshop required for all managers in an organization.  Although that could be an effective addition to the art of building effective leaders, it certainly should not stop there.

Throughout the years we have seen many companies completely transform the leadership skills of their managers with successful management training.  But, they didn’t do it with a conventional approach to management training.

To do this they have followed three essential rules of an effective management training program:

1.    Clearly define what each leader should do that is specific to your organization

2.    Accountability (this can’t be done without first crystallizing #1)

3.    Ongoing Assessment

By clearly defining what all leaders in your organization must do, you are leaving no room for guess work.  Seriously, cut it down to simple sentences “Leaders are expected to prioritize the work of their team”.  It needs to be that cut and dry.  There are some fundamental leadership skills that should be on the list that are a part of the leadership model for nearly every organization we’ve worked with.  There are also those that are specifically unique to your organization and that could make all the difference between failure and success.  These should all be in your leadership plan.

Accountability…this is my favorite part.  If everyone knows what’s expected, then everyone knows that everyone else knows what’s expected.  Get it?  There are no ifs ands or buts about it.  Either you are or you aren’t following the standards of leadership for your organization.  And if you aren’t, people will know.  People might intuitively know that some leadership styles going on in your organization are ineffective of counter-productive, but having all of the expectations down on paper leaves no room for question.   And when a management training program is implemented properly and given the attention it deserves, there is no way for bad leadership to survive for long.

This leads us to the glue that holds the whole process together, ongoing assessment.  As daunting as it may first sound, it is risky to not have regular leadership assessment in an organization that is trying to cultivate top-notch leaders.  And not just an assessment from the boss.  A person’s leadership skills cannot possibly be accurately evaluated by someone they don’t even lead.  Everyone who interacts with that person needs to have a say in it…an anonymous say.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Determine what leaders need to do to be highly effective in your organization.  These become your organization’s unique leadership principles.  Resist the temptation to pull these out of some leadership book.  Your place is unique and has unique leadership needs.
  • Develop a questionnaire that details what ineffective, effective and exemplary behavior looks like for each of these principles.
  • Profile each leader relative to the questionnaire.  Help them select a principle that they can work on to improve their leadership.
  • Re-do the profiles every year or so to help your leaders continue to develop.
